2009 Gödel Prize

Omer Reingold, Salil Vadhan, and Avi Wigderson will receive the 2009 Gödel Prize, presented by SIGACT and the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS), for outstanding papers in theoretical computer science at the ACM Symposium on the Theory of Computing (STOC 2009) May 31 to June 2, in Bethesda, MD.

Symposium in honour of the 75th birthday of ACADEMICIAN ARTO SALOMAA

 The symposium is supported by University of Turku, Academy of Finland, Finnish Academy of Sciences and Letters, and Turku Centre for Computer Science. It takes place under the auspicies of Academia Europaea and European Association for Theoretical Computer Science. The organizers are Prof.J.Karhumäki (Turku, Finland) and Prof.G.Rozenberg (Leiden, the Netherlands), and it is chaired by Prof. G.Rozenberg.

EATCS/LA Best Presentation Award 2009

The EATCS/LA Best Presentation Award, annually assigned by the EATCS Japanese Chapter to the best presentation by a young researcher at the 7th EATCS/LA Workshop on TCS,  for the year 2009 has been assigned to Prof. Ryuhei Uehara, Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, School of Information Science.

EATCS Award for Best ETAPS Paper 2009

The reciepent of the EATCS Award for the best paper in theoretical Computer Science at the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software 2009, ETAPS'09, has been chosen. It is the FOSSACS paper "Synthesis for Component Libraries" by Yohad Lustig and Moshe Y. Vardi.

EATCS Award 2009

The EATCS Award is awarded in recognition of a distinguished career in theoretical computer science. The Committee, consisting of Catuscia Palamidessi (Chair), Paul Spirakis and Emo Welzl in charge of evaluating the nominations to the 2009 EATCS Award has come to the decision to propose Gérard Huet as the candidate for the 2009 EATCS Award in view of the excellent research contributions to theoretical computer science produced throughout his outstanding scientific career. The Committee unanimously shares the motivations contained in the nomination letter. The proposal has been unanimously approved by the EATCS Council. The Award will be assigned during a ceremony that will take place in Rhodes (Greece) during ICALP2009 (July 5-12, 2009).

In memoriam of Prof. Dr. Ingo Wegener, 1950—2008

Ingo Wegener passed away on November 26, 2008, after a three-year struggle with brain cancer.  A farewell celebration was held in Bielefeld on December 4, the day on which Ingo would have turned 58. This is a tremendous loss for all those who knew him personally, for Computer Science in Germany, in Europe, and in the world at large, and for many other communities in which he played a prominent role. Ingo is survived by his wife, Christa.

Gödel Prize 2009 Call for Nominations (Wednesday, November 5, 2008)

The Call for Nominations for the 2009 Gödel Prize has been posted (pdf). Nominations for the award should be submitted to the Award Committee Chair Professor, Shafi Goldwasser. The deadline for nominations is: January 31st, 2009.
